Avian Electronics I (Album, 2020)

Avian Electronics I was the first full-scale work in the Avian Electronics series (along with its sibling multichannel sound installation Keinotekoinen kevät).

An album of synthetic birdsongs and other artificial nature sounds intertwined with minimalistic electronic music, it aimed to crystallize the essence of the series in album format. Like many works in the series, the album was a comment on biodiversity loss and the ongoing, human-led sixth mass extinction event.

The music aimed to find a balance between dystopia and a sombre hope for a future that is not yet completely lost. The album was nominated for the Teosto Prize in 2022. Listen to the album here.

The digital album comes with a PDF booklet that you can also view here.

Avian Electronics II (Album, 2023)

Avian Electronics II aimed, perhaps slightly ambitiously, to sketch out the history, current state and future of life on earth by using synthetic sound as the only raw material. The album was composed correspondingly in three parts titled scenes.

Scene II - Generations – a telling of the history of life on earth, a series of biodiversity peaks and mass extinctions.

Scene III - Noise Cancellation – a synthetic re-creation of the sounds and atmospheres of modern human cities – a strange anomaly in the ways organisms have historically dwelled on earth.

Scene IV - Fast Forward – a glimpse into a possible future where new lifeforms have replaced some of those that are currently being wiped out by us.

The album was preceded by the EP Scene I - The Beginning and the End - a depiction of a primal ocean from which everything was born and into which everything eventually sinks.
